Healing Hands

about Dr Cindy Govender

Dr Cindy Govender qualified as a Specialist Physician/Internist from the College of Physicians South Africa in 2015 and thereafter completed her Masters in Medicine through the University of KwaZulu Natal. She worked in the public sector until September 2019 at which point she went into full-time private practice at Busamed Gateway Private hospital. She is the only female General Specialist Physician in private practice on the North Coast of KZN. Dr Govender retains a keen interest in her field and is a member of the Faculty of Consulting Physicians of South Africa. She is also the Physician representative at the Hospital’s Physician Advisory board since February 2020 to current. Furthermore she was appointed on the Covid-19 Committee for the hospital and to represent Busamed Gateway Private hospital on the Covid-19 Advisory board for Busamed Group in 2021.

She has a keen interest in treating patients with Diabetes Mellitus, hypertension, hypercholestrolaemias, obesity, arthritis, autoimmune conditions such as thyroid diseases, anemias, liver diseases as well as a wide range of infectious conditions, including Covid-19 infections. Dr Govender is one of the frontline workers for Covid-19 at Busamed Gateway Private hospital.

She firmly believes in restoring and maintaining human health by the study, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. A Specialist Physician or Internist is like the Sherlock Holmes of the medical field. They will leave no stone unturned in their quest to find the answers as to what caused the medical problem. This is exactly what drives Dr Cindy Govender. She is never satisfied with just treating a symptom, and always accepts the challenge of unlocking the ‘puzzle’.

Dr Govender is a very approachable individual and this allows her to form close relationships with her patients, creating an environment in which they are comfortable speaking to her about their medical conditions as well as any added stressors in their lives. She believes in a Holistic approach to treating her patients, in that patients can be affected by both organic disease as well as non-organic disease which contributes to their ill health. It was for this reason that she has recently expanded her outpatient practice to incorporate Integrative Medicine techniques, which is the incorporation of specialised intravenous therapies to restore balance to the human body and hence enhance the effects of traditional medicines used to treat acute and chronic medical conditions.

Working with Covid-19

Dr Govender does not walk away from any challenges and is firmly committed and dedicated to her job. This was put to the when we were hit with the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020.

She went from high heels and work suits to scrubs and wellingtons. At no point in time did she put her own needs ahead of that of her patients and she proved this to be true when she silently worked through the second wave of Covid-19 as a frontline worker in the Covid-19 wards and Intensive Care unit, all the while having just found out she was pregnant with a very precious pregnancy.

She believes that if you love what you do then you will do it to the best of your ability, and if you can do that every day then you are making a difference in the world.

A strong passion for her work is what keeps her committed and she strives to continue to use her vast knowledge and expertise in her field to help those in Umhlanga and greater surrounding areas in the years to come and she hopes that she can form a strong and lasting relationship with the communities around her.

“Her patients are a testimony of just how committed she is even during a life threatening pandemic”
